Job Purpose

The Upward Bound Tutor provides tutorial assistance and guidance assigned subject areas geared toward first-generation college-bound high school students to prepare them to achieve educational attainment, college readiness, citizenship skills, and other goals through the Upward Bound grant program. The Upward Bound tutor also assists in developing the tutoring programming under the direction of the Upward Bound Director. (Multiple positions)


Position Description

  • Provide tutoring services for assigned subject areas in-person and virtually.  This includes, but is not limited to, assessing student learning needs and developing and implementing student learning plans.
  • Creates and maintains handouts and supplementary materials to assist student learning.
  • Participates in ongoing tutor training as assigned by the Upward Bound director.
  • Submit promptly to the Upward Bound Director a record of students’ progress, feedback, and performance according to program guidelines and state and federal reports.
  • Communicate with the Upward Bound staff regularly.
  • Duties as assigned by the director.

Position Qualifications and/or Education


Minimum Qualifications and/or Education

  • Earned Bachelor’s degree with knowledge and skills corresponding with the math, science, English, technology, and social science subject areas -OR- secondary teaching certification in the subject area and/or a minimum of 12 credit hours of college credit in the subject area.
  • Demonstrated experience working with adolescents from diverse backgrounds, academic needs, and abilities,

Preferred Qualifications and/or Education

  • Demonstrated experience working with first-generation college-bound students.
  • Master’s degree and teacher certification with knowledge and skills that correspond with the math, science, English, technology, and social science subject areas.
  • One to three (1-3) years of experience teaching, tutoring, or providing support services in an academic setting.

Work Schedule
Tutors will work ten (10) hours per week during the high school academic school year. (30 weeks). Must be able to work a variable schedule/hours to meet operational needs.  This position is grant funded through 2027. Continued employment after this date will be based on whether or not additional funding becomes available.
