SUMMARY
Adult Education Instructors shall provide learner centered instruction for basic literacy and math through high school equivalency/college readiness skills in reading, writing, math computation, applied math, science, and social studies in preparation for taking the 2014 GED® exam. They will ensure compliance with all aspects of adult education as required by the Adult and Family Literacy Act (AFELA), the Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR), and Kansas City Kansas Community College. Instruction and educational support services will be provided to incarcerated adults at the Lansing Correctional Facility who lack a high school credential or secondary level credential or who are not proficient in English to prepare for GED exams.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
- Teach and/or tutor all aspects of GED classes, including writing, math, reading, social studies, science, technology, and workforce skills to meet or exceed Kansas Board of Regents negotiated targets for the institution.
- Prepare students to achieve educational attainment, secure employment, transition to post-secondary, college readiness, citizenship skills, and other goals set forth by the program or the Kansas Board of Regents.
- Utilize a variety of effective teaching strategies to engage and motivate adult learners, addressing various learning modalities, abilities, needs and interests through differentiated instruction to ensure every student makes adequate progress related to their learning goals.
- Establish professional intrapersonal relationships with residents and encourage accountability by tracking attendance, behavior, and progress toward outcomes.
- Administer assessments to students as necessary or set forth by KBOR Proficiency Attainment Model (PAM).
- Adapt instruction based on summative and formative assessments to prepare students to pass all GED exams.
- Participate in data collection and submit all necessary records for state and federal reports in a timely manner.
- Collaborate with other Education staff including instructors and Education Navigator to ensure high quality programming for residents.
- Understand and abide by the safety and security procedures, rules, and guidelines defined by the Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC) and the correctional facility and participate in all required and recommended KDOC staff development training.
- Maintain strong math and English teaching skills.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.

- Possess strong written and oral communication skills.
- Must demonstrate a commitment to and ability to work with various student and faculty population.
- High energy, self-starter who can work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to develop and maintain excellent working relationships and establish credibility with all levels of employee in the organization.
- Detail oriented.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 applications, especially Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to manage several projects with multiple deadlines simultaneously.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in education, or related field.
- Training, experience, and/or coursework in individual learning methodology in basic academic skill areas including reading, writing, and mathematics to improve learner academic skills.
- Interest and/or experience in supporting learners in an alternative setting.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in education, or related field.
- Teaching experience, especially 9-12.
- Coaching and instructing Adult Education/Adult Learners.
- Experience teaching high school equivalency skills to adult learners preferably GED® preparation.

WORK SCHEDULE
Anticipated hours Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. 40 hours per week/may require some flexibility based on facility schedule.
