Job Purpose

College Police provides safety and security related services to all students, staff, faculty, and visitors for all KCKCC Colleges. Major duties and responsibilities include patrolling College (foot, bicycle, and vehicle); responding to calls for assistance; locking and unlocking facilities; monitoring security cameras; identifying violations; providing security services for events; directing traffic; issuing traffic citations; and maintaining records, logs, and documentation of activities and incidents.
 

Position Description

  • Detect and process traffic and parking violations according to college regulations.
  • Enforce all federal laws, state statutes, local ordinances and College regulations concerning the safety of college personnel and individuals from the community who utilize the college facilities.
  • Providing general patrol of college grounds and buildings by vehicle or on foot.
  • Write reports on criminal offenses and other incidents.
  • Conduct follow-up investigations of crimes and incidents.
  • Must be able to perform under stressful conditions.
  • Attend classes, training sessions, and workshops to maintain current knowledge of law enforcement.
  • Keep current on changes in his/her area of responsibility.
  • Being able to work all shifts and available to cover any extra shifts that may arise due to sickness vacations, special events, etc.
  • Submitting daily activity log to the Chief of College Police.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of College Police.
  • This position description is intended to represent only the key areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the operational needs of the department.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of Kansas Criminal and traffic statutes.
  • Thorough knowledge of both College and Departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of campus buildings and grounds.
  • Operational knowledge of report writing, computer aided-dispatch, fire, camera, and door access computer systems used by College Police.
  • Observational skills sufficient to detect crimes and progress and apprehend offenders and physical fitness necessary to safely affect arrests.
  • Knowledge of appropriate first responder procedures to properly respond to and deal with criminal activity and natural disasters to include fires, tornado, and other events that threatens the campus community Must possess the qualifications needed to obtain a state certification; preference will be given to applicants possessing state certification currently.
  • Must be able to successfully complete police academy training within one year of appointment, thus obtaining state certification (if not already state certified).
  • Ability to pass a Field Training Program (FTO) that may last 12 weeks.

Position Qualifications and/or Education


Minimum Qualifications and/or Education

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent with one (1) year of experience or training in a security related area or a combination of education and tested experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and can operate a motor vehicle.

Preferred Qualifications and/or Education

  • Attendance at Law Enforcement conferences, workshops and/or seminars.
  • An Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Law Enforcement or a related discipline.
  • Current state law enforcement commissioned officers.
  • Evidence of specialized training, firearms, crime scene, self-defense, etc.
  • Experience working in an educational institution.
  • Demonstrate experience using Microsoft Office products.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, and sit. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift items. Must have the physical ability to successfully affect arrests of persons breaking laws. Must have stamina to work 10 hour shifts with occasional overtime covering absences of other officers as needed.
 

Work Schedule

Assignment will include work at any Kansas City Kansas Community College campus location for various shifts to include morning, evening, overnight and /or weekends. Schedule subject to change to meet operational needs.
