SUMMARY
Reporting directly to the Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Dean of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS) is responsible for the leadership, growth, and effective management of the disciplines, faculty, staff, and students within the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Division.

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Leadership & Division Management

  • Provide academic and administrative leadership for the division, including faculty, staff, academic programs, and students, in support of the College’s mission and strategic plan.
  • Lead and support the recruitment, retention, evaluation, and professional development of full-time and adjunct faculty and staff.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships across the College and support interdisciplinary collaboration within the division.
  • Participate in college-wide planning, governance, and decision-making processes, and provide regular updates to the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Academic Programs & Curriculum

  • Provide leadership for curriculum development, program and course review, and academic innovation to ensure instructional quality and alignment with student success goals.
  • Lead new program development and make recommendations regarding program modification, continuation, or discontinuation based on enrollment, assessment, and institutional priorities.
  • Oversee program review, assessment, and continuous improvement processes, ensuring alignment with institutional effectiveness practices.

Strategic Planning & Institutional Effectiveness

  • Provide leadership for division-level strategic planning, including alignment with the Academic Master Plan and other institutional priorities.
  • Support data-informed decision-making and continuous improvement across programs and services.

Operations, Budget & Compliance

  • Manage and oversee division fiscal resources, including annual budget development, monitoring, and responsible stewardship.
  • Collaborate with faculty and administrators to develop instructional schedules and staffing plans that support student access, completion, and efficient use of resources.
  • Ensure compliance with accreditation standards, including Higher Learning Commission requirements, as well as college policies and applicable state and federal regulations.

Collaboration & Student Success

  • Collaborate with Marketing and Institutional Image, Institutional Effectiveness, Student Services, and other divisions to promote academic programs, support student recruitment and retention, and enhance student experience.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s or higher degree from a regionally accredited institution in one of the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences disciplines, and/or a related discipline represented in the Division.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience working in institutions of higher education.
  • Classroom teaching experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctorate from a regionally accredited institution in one of the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences disciplines and/or a related discipline represented in the Division.
  • Instructional and leadership experience in a community college setting.

WORKING CONDITIONS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, and sit. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift items.

WORK SCHEDULE
40 hours per week, must be able to work a variable schedule/hour to meet operational needs. May require evening and weekend hours.
