Job Purpose
The Upward Bound Academy Program Assistant serves to assist summer instructors in the classrooms, maintaining a safe and orderly environment, and complying with the program and institution’s mission, vision, strategic plan, and Upward Bound Summer Academy guidelines. (MULTIPLE POSITIONS)


Position Description

  • Supervise student scholars and always ensure their physical and emotional well-being, adhering to College and Upward Bound Summer Academy policies and procedures.
  • Work together as a team, actively communicating with and supporting other staff members.
  • Assist the Upward Bound Director and Advisor.
  • Facilitate small-group discussions on topics outlined in the Summer Staff Handbook.
  • Participate actively in staff meetings and weekly supervision meetings.
  • Plan and supervise recreational activities for students.
  • Serve as a chaperon for college trips and aid with logistical details.
  • Ensure program safety procedures outlined in the Summer Staff Handbook are followed by participants.
  • Monitor and communicate the schedule to students ensuring participation and punctuality to activities and events.
  • Respond promptly to student issues, conflicts, mediation needs, and crisis situations. Document all policy violations consistently. Report any inappropriate student behavior or violations of policies to the Program Director.
  • Advocate for individual participant needs and communicate participant concerns to appropriate staff.
  • Actively participate in fostering an environment that promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in an educational environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director and the Dean of Student Services that align with the College’s and Upward Bound Academy's strategic priorities and goals.

  • High energy, self-starter who can work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to develop and maintain excellent working relationships and establish credibility with all levels of students, faculty, and staff in the organization and community partners.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 applications.
  • Ability to manage several projects with multiple deadlines simultaneously.

Position Qualifications and/or Education


Minimum Qualifications and/or Education

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be able to work June 1, 2024 – July 19, 2024.
  • CPR and First Aid Certified (valid certificate must be obtained by the first day of programming on June 5, 2024, if applicable, or CPR and First Aid Training will be offered during the Upward Bound Academy Program training during the week of May 28, 2024.

Preferred Qualifications and/or Education

  • Associates or higher degree.
  • A demonstrated record of teaching experience or youth programming experience.
  • A demonstrated record of summer day or resident camp experience.
  • Multilingual writing and speaking proficiency.

Work Schedule
The Upward Bound Academy Program Assistant will work thirty-two (32) hours a week, Monday – Thursday for five (5) weeks and forty hours (40) during the sixth week, (Seasonal -Summer). Must be able to work a variable schedule/hour to meet operational needs. May require evening and weekend hours. This position is grant funded through 2028. Continued employment after this date will be based on whether additional funding becomes available.
