Job Purpose
The Upward Bound Instructor shall be responsible to the Director of Upward Bound and assist in the curriculum development and teach assigned subjects at monthly Saturday class sessions geared toward first-generation college-bound high school students to prepare students to achieve educational attainment, college readiness, citizenship skills, and other goals set forth by the Upward Bound grant program. (Multiple positions)


Position Description

  • Teach all aspects of assigned subjects at Upward Bound monthly Saturday class sessions. This includes, but is not limited to, providing feedback to students that will enhance their academic growth and ensuring regular communication about student progress and learning with Upward Bound staff.
  • Responsible for developing instructional material, curriculum/course outlines, and course materials. This includes, but is not limited to, preparing final assessments and other learning activities. And the use of course assessment results to improve instruction and learning.
  • Responsible for submitting a record of students’ progress, feedback, and performance according to program guidelines and promptly following federal reports to the Upward Bound director.
  • Other duties assigned by the Director of Upward Bound and the Dean of Student Services consistent with the Upward Bound grant and College strategic priorities and goals.

Position Qualifications and/or Education


Minimum Qualifications and/or Education

  • Earned Bachelor’s degree with knowledge and skills corresponding with the math, science, English, technology, and social science subject areas -OR- secondary teaching certification in the subject area and/or a minimum of 12 credit hours of college credit in the subject area.
  • Demonstrated experience working with adolescents from diverse backgrounds, academic needs, and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications and/or Education

  • Demonstrated experience working with first-generation college-bound students.
  • Master’s degree and teacher certification with knowledge and skills that correspond with the math, science, English, technology, and social science subject areas.
  • One to three (1-3) years of experience teaching, tutoring, or providing support services in an academic setting.

Work Schedule
Instructors will work five (5) hours per month including a once-a-month Saturday Session. Must be able to work a variable schedule/hours to meet operational needs. 
This position is grant funded through 2027. Continued employment after this date will be based on whether or not additional funding becomes available.
