SUMMARY
The Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Military and Veteran Student Services department, including the development and oversight of all major programs and services. The Director has the overall responsibility for the development and enhancement of college services for veterans, service members, dependents, and family members.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
- Directs, develops, and coordinates all strategies and programs to assist with the education and development of KCKCC military service members, veterans, and dependents.
- Responsible for providing consistent and timely service to all prospective and current students who are service-connected: military members, Veteran, military dependents, or other service-connected groups.
- Responsible for the implementation and expansion of all military and veteran initiatives, including marketing, relationship-building with external entities, fundraising, recruitment, retention, and customer service.
- Responsible for the development and implementation of military/veteran-friendly policies and procedures.
- Coordinates assessment functions for all Military and Veteran Programs to determine the benefits of programs and services regarding student learning outcomes and student success.
- Oversees KCKCC VA certification process and serves as KCKCC’s Primary VA Certifying Official to ensure proper and timely submission of VA certifications for all Military and Veteran students.
- Works with KCKCC faculty and staff to develop and oversee student engagement programs and services aimed specifically at service-connected students.
- Provides oversight and coordination of KCKCC’s ROTC program and serves as the primary liaison between KCKCC and KU Jayhawk Battalion ROTC.
- Works closely with the Department of Veteran Affairs and college departments regarding the availability of resources and opportunities to assist veterans in education and career advancement.
- Submits academic information to the Kansas Commission on Veterans Affairs and serves as the point of contact.
- Coordinates and implements outreach efforts to prospective students.
- Assist with external funding opportunities for additional KCKCC Military and Veteran services.
- Facilitates training for KCKCC Faculty and Staff on working effectively with service-connected students.
- Maintains official educational benefits files for all KCKCC veterans and military tuition assistance.
- Assists with requests for tuition assistance through the GoArmyEd portal.
- Assists with maintaining programs and course requirements in GoArmyEd and SOCAD.
- Maintains webpage for KCKCC military-affiliated students.
- Develops and recommends policies to the college leadership in support of Military and Veteran students.
- Represents KCKCC with military/academic organizations, such as NAIMES, CCME, DODWW, NAVPA, AVECO, and the state ACME.
- Serves on committees and task forces as directed.
- Represents KCKCC at veteran events.
- Attends annual training events to remain current on veteran educational benefits regulations and processes.
- Prepares a monthly report regarding veteran and service member activities.
- Reviews benefit user schedules to comply with plans of study.
- Completes Military Friendly Surveys as directed.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook e-mail, the internet, and AI.
- Ability to work well with individuals of diverse cultural and educational backgrounds and age groups.
- Must be able to handle difficult situations with diplomacy.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of all matters and information.
- Must be able to work with minimal supervision and to initiate and work on projects independently.
- Capacity to prioritize and manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Willingness to work overtime hours during enrollment peak times.
- Experience in maintaining and working with computers or web-based databases. (CRM, starfish, Navigate)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- A master’s or higher degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Public Administration, Counseling, or a related field.
- At least three (3) years of successful administrative experience in a higher education setting and/or a professional field directly relevant to military educational benefits is required.
- Two years of experience in veteran services or military program management.
- Three years of supervisory work experience.
- Experience in managing projects, coordinating programs, and working with complex data systems is required.
- Experience in assisting veterans with various issues within higher education, such as certification for educational benefits, working with the Department of Veterans Affairs, and tuition assistance programs, etc.
- Verifiable experience working with federal and state regulations governing veterans' benefits (e.g., Title 38, GI Bill®, DoD Tuition Assistance, Isakson and Roe compliance).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of two years’ experience in a veteran’s education benefits position at a community college preferred.
- Prior military service preferred or military family member.
- Specialized training in veteran services, Trauma-informed care, and disability services.
- Experience building partnerships with VA hospitals and Vet Centers, local military installations, and transition programs.
- Certified School Certifying Official (SCO) experience.

In performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, talk, hear, walk, and sit. Occasionally, the employee may need to push or lift items. WORK SCHEDULE
Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Must be able to work variable schedule/hours to meet operational needs. May require evening and weekend hours, frequent travel, and the ability to work them when required.
