SUMMARY
The Specialist II works with the Director of the Military and Veteran Center to administer all programs and services for Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) military-affiliated students. Specifically, the Coordinator collaborates with other KCKCC Faculty and Staff and external constituencies on initiatives for KCKCC Military and Veteran Students. The Specialist II serves as a Certifying Official and provides expertise in Veteran Affairs (VA) educational benefits while working with all Military and Veteran students attending KCKCC.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

  • Serve as the front-line staff member for serving all military and veteran students in the KC Metro, online, and all KCKCC locations.
  • Serve as a VA Certifying Official to ensure proper and timely submission of VA certifications for all KCKCC Military and Veteran students.
  • Collaborate with Admissions Representatives, Student Success staff, and other faculty and staff on the provision of services for all KCKCC students who are service-connected, military members, veterans, Military Dependents, or other groups.
  • Primarily responsible for coordinating with the Kansas State Approving Agency (SAA) for Veterans Education to ensure that all KCKCC programs meet the state education requirements for GI Bill use.
  • Responsible for preparing for and passing all inspections and visits from the Kansas SAA and Department of Veteran Affairs.
  • Primarily responsible for ensuring compliance by updating and preparing the Department of Defense (DOD) Voluntary Education Partnership Memorandum of Agreement for the President of KCKCC’s signature.
  • Provide ongoing Co-Curricular assessment of student veterans and military-affiliated student needs; Collaborate with college departments and community resources to implement teaching, learning, and support strategies to increase military-affiliated students' achievement.
  • Develop, coordinate, and present Green Zone Training annually to Faculty and Staff to increase the level of professional development and understanding of challenges faced by Military Affiliated students.
  • Supervise Administrative Assistant, Student Interns, and Work Study Students.
  • Serve as the advisor to the Student Veterans of America organization with outreach and programs for student veterans.
  • Design and promote programs designed to enrich KCKCC’s military population through student networking and career opportunities.
  • Develop surveys for Military and Veteran students to collect valuable feedback on how KCKCC can better serve its military population.
  • Serve as a resource and reference for all military and veteran-related questions from KCKCC-affiliated individuals and non-KCKCC-affiliated individuals.
  • Represent KCKCC with military/academic organizations, such as NAIMES, CCME, DODWW, NAVPA, AVECO, and the state ACME.
  • Develop content and maintain presence on KCKCC Veterans’ Facebook page.
  • Work with Veterans Affairs on all issues that affect a student’s certification status.
  • Assists military and veteran students in the completion of VA paperwork needed for military evaluation for military credit.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and under pressure.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
  • Able to be flexible with your work schedule.
  • Demonstrate proper verbal and written communication skills.
  • Quality customer service skills such as discretion, patience, etiquette, and professionalism.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Experience in maintaining and working with a computer or web-based database.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree.
  • Minimum of two(2) years’ experience in a veteran’s education benefits position.
  • Prior military service.

WORKING CONDITIONS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, and sit. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift items.


WORK SCHEDULE
40 hours per week, during regular hours of Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm. Must be able to work a variable schedule/hour to meet operational needs. May require evening and weekend hours.
