SUMMARY
College Police provide safety and security related services to all students, staff, faculty, and visitors for all KCKCC Colleges. Major duties and responsibilities include patrolling College (foot, bicycle, and vehicle); responding to calls for assistance; locking and unlocking facilities; monitoring security cameras; identifying violations; providing security services for events; directing traffic; issuing traffic citations; and maintaining logs, and documentation of activities and incidents.

The Community Engagement Officer serves as a vital liaison between College Police and the college community, fostering positive relationships through proactive engagement, event participation, and community outreach initiatives. This position combines traditional college safety and security responsibilities with a strong emphasis on community-oriented policing, educational programming, and collaborative problem-solving. The officer is responsible for attending and organizing community events, building trust with students, staff, and faculty, and fostering a welcoming and safe campus environment through relationship-building and transparent communication.


POSITION DESCRIPTION

  • Plan, coordinate, and organize community engagement events and campus safety programs, including crime prevention workshops, safety fairs, and educational seminars.
  • Represent College Police at college-wide events, student organization meetings, orientations, open houses, and community gatherings to build positive relationships and increase visibility.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with student organizations, academic departments, faculty, staff, and community groups to enhance campus safety initiatives.
  • Conduct educational presentations on topics such as personal safety, crime prevention, active shooter preparedness, substance abuse awareness, and emergency response procedures.
  • Serve as a resource and point of contact for students, faculty, and staff seeking information about campus safety, security services, and crime prevention.
  • Create and distribute safety awareness materials, social media content, and newsletters to promote community engagement and campus safety initiatives.
  • Organize and participate in community policing activities such as "Coffee with a Cop," safety walks, and ride-along programs.
  • Collaborate with campus departments to address safety concerns and implement community-driven solutions.
  • Gather feedback from the campus community to improve police services and address concerns proactively.
CAMPUS SAFETY AND SECURITY
  • Provide general patrol of college grounds and buildings by vehicle, bicycle, or on foot with emphasis on visibility and approachability.
  • Respond to calls for assistance with a customer service-oriented and problem-solving approach.
  • Enforce federal laws, state statutes, local ordinances, and college regulations concerning the safety of college personnel and community members utilizing college facilities.
  • Detect and process traffic and parking violations according to college regulations.
  • Write reports on criminal offenses and other incidents with attention to detail and professionalism.
  • Conduct follow-up investigations of crimes and incidents assigned.
  • Monitor security cameras, lock and unlock facilities, and provide security services for events.
  • Identify suspicious activities and respond appropriately to ensure student, staff, faculty, and visitor safety.
  • Direct traffic and maintain order during special events and emergency situations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Thorough knowledge of Kansas Criminal and traffic statutes.
  • Thorough knowledge of both College and Departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of campus buildings and grounds.
  • Operational knowledge of report writing, computer-aided dispatch, fire, camera, and door access computer systems used by College Police.
  • Knowledge of appropriate first responder procedures to properly respond to and deal with criminal activity and natural disasters, including fires, tornadoes, and other events that threaten the campus community.
  • Must possess the qualifications needed to obtain state certification; preference will be given to applicants possessing current state certification.
  • Must be able to successfully complete police academy training within one year of appointment, thus obtaining state certification (if not already state certified).
  • Ability to pass a Field Training Program (FTO) that may last 12 weeks.

Technical & Physical Abilities:
  • Observational skills sufficient to detect crimes and suspicious activity while maintaining a welcoming presence.
  • Physical fitness is necessary to safely perform patrol duties and respond to emergencies.
  • Ability to patrol the college by foot, bicycle, or vehicle and conduct security checks.
  • Ability to perform under stressful conditions while maintaining professionalism and composure.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and ability to create presentations, reports, and promotional materials.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding law enforcement and college information.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent with one (1) year of experience or training in a security related area or a combination of education and tested experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and operate a motor vehicle.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Attendance at Law Enforcement conferences, workshops and/or seminars.
  • An associate or bachelor’s degree in law enforcement or a related discipline.
  • Current state law enforcement commissioned officers.
  • Evidence of specialized training, firearms, crime scene, self-defense, etc.
  • Experience working in an educational institution.
  • Demonstrate experience using Microsoft Office products.

WORKING CONDITIONS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, and sit. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift items. Must have the physical ability to successfully affect arrests of persons breaking laws. Must have stamina to work 10-hour shifts with occasional overtime covering absences of other officers as needed.


WORK SCHEDULE
Assignment will include work at any Kansas City Kansas Community College location for various shifts to include morning, evening, overnight and /or weekends. Schedule subject to change to meet operational needs.
