JOB PURPOSE:
This part-time staff position reports to the Dean of Social & Behavioral Sciences & Public Service and the Coordinator of the Teacher Education Program. This position will work closely with the Coordinator of the Teacher Education Program to provide academic guidance and advising for prospective, newly enrolled, and continuing postsecondary learners whose academic goals are specifically to obtain the Associates in Arts degree in Elementary Education and transfer education to Kansas State University’s Elementary Education Program. This position will focus exclusively on Project KSTEP-Up, an acronym for Kansas Statewide Teacher Education Pathway for Underserved and Place-bound.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Recruit a minimum of new students of diverse backgrounds with an emphasis on underserved populations each academic year of this program.
  • Provide comprehensive academic advising services for a minimum of 30 students for the duration of the grant.
  • Assist students in the program with choosing realistic educational objectives, academic course-work, and provide assistance with preparation to transfer to the Online Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education Program at K-State.
  • Follow up with a minimum of 10 students each year as needed throughout a semester.
  • Attend information and recruitment related events hosted by high schools in USD 500.
  • Become well versed in the Online Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education Program at K-State through active communication with K-State Project KSTEP-Up advisor(s).
  • Schedule enrollment sessions for a minimum of 10 students at the beginning of each enrollment period
  • Schedule and complete degree/certificate checks for a minimum of 10 students in the program.
  • Follow up with students within a short period of time after the first contact.
  • Provide quality academic advising that includes assessment of individual student, transcript, work habits, interests, skills, personal traits, and physical capabilities.
  • Track goal and degree completion of each assigned student each semester.
  • Work collaboratively with the Dean of Enrollment Management, the Coordinator of Teacher Education, and other administrators across the college to implement and promote student retention within the Project K-STEP-UP program.
  • Provide accurate and timely advice to students regarding scheduling, attendance, academic progress, curriculum changes, and college policies by meeting individually with students and through small/large group sessions.
  • Provide timely advisement information specific to the Project K-STEP-UP program, consultation, and training to advisors across the institution at all locations as needed.
  • Assess and interpret assessment information in reading, writing, and math for incoming and continuing students including students for whom English is not their primary language, traditional and transfer students.
  • Attend all meetings related to the Project K-STEP-UP program.
  • Will meet one-on-one with the Coordinator of the Teacher Education Program on a regular basis or as needed.
  • Act as a liaison to the counselors assigned to the Project K-STEP-UP program in USD 500. Communicate efficiently and accurately with them.
  • Provide academic plans for students in Project K-STEP-UP program who are placed on academic probation, financial aid warning and/or financial aid exclusion.
  • Interpret and explain degree audits and transfer equivalencies.
  • Assist students in completing Financial Aid Exclusion Appeals.
  • Inform students of available support services and provide assistance as needed in accessing them. Make appropriate referrals for tutoring, career, housing, and external counseling services.
  • With the aid of available technology, provide specialized advising interventions for students enrolled in the Project K-STEP-UP program potentially deemed to be at academic risk (Early Alert) including but not limited to first generation students, non-traditional adult learners, and English language (ESOL) learners.
  • Consult with program coordinators and faculty as needed on the Project K-STEP-UP program and course-related issues.
  • Assist with the coordination and presentation of the Project KSTEP-Up program and activities for new students, their families and for potential students completing campus visits.
  • Provide up-to-date data on various aspects of the Project K-STEP-UP program related to assigned duties. This includes video and audio recordings of anecdotes.
  • Other duties as assigned.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND/OR EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Teacher Education or closely related field such as Educational Administration, Educational Leadership, Child Psychology/Adolescent Development.
  • Experience maintaining and working with a computer or web-based database.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND/OR EDUCATION:

  • Master’s degree.
  • Bi-lingual – fluency in Spanish.
  • Community or two (2) year college experience.
  • Field/classroom teaching experience in K-12 education (or K-6).

SALARY RANGE: $25.54 per hour, salary will be contingent upon grant funding.
 

WORK SCHEDULE: 20 hours per week, Monday-Friday hours to be determined by supervisor. Must be able to work a variable schedule/hours to meet operational needs. May require evening and weekend hours.
