Job Purpose

Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) is currently searching for Adjunct faculty to teach a full range of American Sign Language (ASL) courses depending on the experience, background, and institutional needs. This assignment may include teaching at other KCKCC locations, day or evening classes, weekend classes, large classes, distance learning and using multiple teaching methodologies. This is a POOL position. Application materials for this adjunct position accepted on an on-going basis due to increasing demand for courses in this subject area.

Position Description

  • Teach courses which fulfill the current curriculum goals and objective
  • Ability to use innovative and creative teaching techniques and equipment, including the use of multimedia hardware and software and on-line instructional techniques
  • Ability to use teaching methods conducive to learning and emphasize student interaction
  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues in an environment that promotes innovation, teaching, learning and service to diverse student population
  • Assess student work in a timely manner and submit course grades by the posted deadline
  • Be able to organize and present ASL course concepts to a wide range of students with varying backgrounds and abilities, and adjust teaching techniques accordingly
  • Design, administer, and grade essays, examinations, and applicable projects to accurately assess achievement of course objectives as identified in the syllabus
  • Maintain regular office hours to meet one-on-one with students
  • Participate in department/discipline, division, campus, and college meetings and committees related to the discipline or program
  • Plan course instruction based upon approved syllabus, goals, and objectives
  • Support and Adhere to the college's goals, policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Qualifications and/or Education


Minimum Qualifications and/or Education

  • Master’s degree in American Sign Language (ASL), Sign Language Interpreting, Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, Linguistics, Interpretation, Communications (with emphasis in deaf educations), Translation, or Rehabilitation (with emphasis in deafness) or a related field, or a master’s degree in another discipline with 18 graduate-level credit hours in the discipline
  • Current American Sign Language Teacher’s Association (ASLTA), Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI or DI) or Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID) certification
  • One (1) year of relevant teaching or non-teaching work experience

Preferred Qualifications and/or Education

  • Other related certificates demonstrating completion of training related to teaching ASL, e.g. Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc., etc.
  • Knowledge and experience in teaching ASL skills, Deaf Culture content and Interpreter Education courses
  • Native or near-native proficiency in ASL
  • Knowledge of Industry- related software
  • Teaching experience in an open enrollment, urban community college with a diverse population
  • Experience with a Learning Management System such as Blackboard
  • Experience in learner-centered pedagogy

Work Schedule

Must be able to work a variable schedule/hour to meet operational needs. May require evening and weekend hours. Your appointment is contingent on sufficient enrollments, or on program and scheduling changes.
