Job Purpose

Through a combination of classroom and behind the wheel instruction, they will be responsible for teaching Drivers’ Education classes. They teach students to operate vehicles and instill respect for state driving laws and parking regulations. This is a continuous position. Application materials for this position are accepted on an on-going basis due to the increasing demand for courses in this subject area. 
 

Position Description

  • Conduct classroom and on-the-road instruction consistent with the Kansas (DMV) requirements and standards, in order to prepare new student drivers for successful licensure
  • Prepare and deliver an 8-hour classroom instructional program for a group of students, plus 4-6 driving lessons with each student
  • Duties include recordkeeping for tracking all aspects of each student's driver education training and related communications and reporting to students, parents, school management personnel, and the DMV
  • Provide behind-the-wheel training that conforms with DMV requirements
  • Performs professional services requiring excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills, computer data entry, recordkeeping, and working directly with faculty, students, parents, the general public and other school personnel
  • Creates an environment that is conducive to serving students while meeting the requirements of federal, state and local mandates
  • Responsible for maintaining impeccable safety standards. Additional responsibilities include maintaining efficient and effective operations of all areas under his/her direction and control
  • Performs varied and responsible duties requiring a familiarity with school operations, a thorough understanding of DMV regulations and the exercise of judgment and initiative in completing tasks
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Ability to work during evenings and on weekends, as required
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Qualifications and/or Education

Minimum Qualifications and/or Education

  • High school Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Have a driver's education teaching endorsement issued by the Kansas State Department of Education from date of hire and retain the certification throughout employment
  • If applicant does not currently hold a driver’s education teaching endorsement by the hire date, they must be currently enrolled in a state-approved drivers education endorsement program by the date of hire and hold a teaching endorsement issued by the Kansas State Department of Education by the start date and retain the certification throughout employment
  • If not an educator with a valid state teaching license, they must get state certification as a substitute teacher and meet requirements outlined by Kansas Department of Education on or before for the start date and retain the certification throughout employment
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and no license suspensions, DUI, DWI or Chemical Test failures or similar citations within the past three (3) years
  • Ability to complete annual background check with an acceptable MVR background check with no more than three (3) moving violations within the last three (3) years and no suspended violations in the last three (3) years

Preferred Qualifications and/or Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Holds a Kansas Teaching License
  • Two (2) years of teaching experience. One year as a Driver Education instructor and experience teaching at-risk youth
  • Previous successful professional experience in areas such as law enforcement, paramedic, firefighting, teaching, coaching, etc.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as the ability to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.

 

Work Schedule

Up to or no more than 29 hours per week, must be able to work a variable schedule/hour to meet operational needs. May require evening and weekend hours. Your appointment is contingent on enough enrollments, or on program and scheduling changes.
