 FULL-TIME CAMPUS POLICE OFFICER

Reporting directly to the Director of the Campus Police, the Full-Time Campus Police Officer shall be responsible for:
 
FUNCTIONAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Maintaining the preservation of peace, the prevention of crime, and protect the health, life, and physical property of the College campus.
  2. Detecting and processing traffic and parking violations according to the College regulations.
  3. Enforcing all federal laws, state statutes, local ordinances and College regulations concerning the safety of College personnel and individuals from the community who utilize the college facilities.
  4. Providing general patrol of campus grounds and buildings by vehicle or on foot.
  5. Writing reports on criminal offenses and other incidents.
  6. Conducting follow-up investigations of crimes and incidents.
  7. Must be able to perform adequately under stressful conditions.
 
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Attending classes, training sessions, and workshops to maintain current knowledge of law enforcement.
  2. Keeping current on changes in his/her area of responsibility.
  3. Being able to work all shifts and available to cover any extra shifts that may arise due to sickness, vacations, special events, etc..
  4. Submitting daily activity log to the Director of Campus Police.
 
CONSULTING TASKS
  1. Performing other duties as assigned by the Director of Campus Police.
 
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Supervising students who work in the department.
 
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Must possess a valid driver’s license and have the ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  2. Must possess the qualifications needed to obtain a state certification; preference will be given to applicants possessing state certification currently.
  3. Must be able to successfully complete Police Academy training within one year of appointment, thus obtaining state certification (if not already state certified).
  4. Must have knowledge of basic Law Enforcement concepts to ensure the safety and security of the College campus.
  5. Must have the ability to respond to unexpected situations that may occur on the College campus.
  6. Must have the ability to abide by and carry out a code of ethics as established by the department and College administration.
  7. Must display the ability to serve individuals with various ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds in a courteous manner.
  8. Must possess good oral and written communication skills.
  9. Must display the ability to follow instructions and work with minimal supervision.
  10. Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality.
  11. Basic computer skills and knowledge in working with Microsoft Office preferred.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit.  Occasionally the employee will bend or twist at the neck more than the average person.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift items.  The employee is directly responsible for safety, wellbeing, and work output.
 
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as the  ability to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
 
  1. Must possess physical ability sufficient to ride a bicycle around the campus as part of the bicycle patrol unit.
  2. Must have the visual ability sufficient to see all pertinent information necessary to perform law enforcement functions, i.e. suspect information, alarms, etc.
  3. Must have the hearing ability sufficient to hear alarms, phones and other pertinent information necessary to perform law enforcement functions.
  4. Must have the physical ability sufficient to perform all necessary law enforcement functions, including patrolling the hallways and other areas of campus that cannot be covered by vehicular patrol.
 
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  1. High school diploma or equivalent is required with attendance at Law Enforcement conferences, workshops and/or seminars preferred.  An Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Law Enforcement is preferred.
  2. Current state law enforcement commissioned officers preferred.
  3. Minimum of one year experience performing law enforcement/security duties, preferably in an educational setting, preferred.
 
All applicants tentatively selected for the position of Campus Police Officer at Kansas City Kansas Community College will be required to submit to and successfully complete a psychological evaluation and physical examination prior to appointment.  Applicants will also be required to submit to a urinalysis to screen for illegal or prohibited drug use.  Appointment to the position is contingent upon a negative drug test results.
 
SALARY:          $30,995.34 - $37,073.58 per year dependent upon law enforcement certification
                          Plus fringe benefits.
