The Cosmetology Instructor shall be responsible to the Dean of the Technical Education Center. The instructor is responsible for instruction and training in all areas of cosmetology that will prepare the student to pass the Kansas cosmetology certification and for entry level employment in cosmetology. The instructor will be responsible for developing student skills, knowledge and attitudes commensurate to the goals of the program and effectively using materials and equipment to meet goals.  The instructor will also complete other related work as required.

 

FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Utilize a variety of effective and professional teaching techniques and methods, which assist student(s) in attaining the performance objectives of the program and each.
  • Specify, select, install, operate, and maintain necessary equipment and/or training modules required to support the specific course(s) being taught within departmental budget restraints.
  • Prepare course syllabi addressing targeted student abilities, specific competencies, textbook requirements, grading/assessment methodology, course scheduling, and/or other items as required.
  • Prepare a program outline that will be distributed to students each semester.
  • Provide regular, timely reports to students of academic performance including current grades in course(s) taught.
  • At the completion or termination of a student’s training, submit a report of the total number of hours of training the student received and the related skills achieved.
  • Maintain and interact with a program advisory committee which will include representatives from related business, industry, unions, professional organizations and other public and/or private agencies providing the same or related training and hold a minimum of two meetings during each school year.
  • Following appropriate safety procedures in the classroom and clinical area, and report all safety hazards or incidents to the appropriate personnel.
  • Organize all aspects of the cosmetology program to provide positive customer relationships.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the program, division, and total institution by timely attendance and submission of required grade, attendance, or other miscellaneous reports to the administration.
  • Participate in marketing activities for the division and/or institution by interfacing with the college’s Public Information Director to provide supporting materials as required for the development of advertising promotions such as brochures, media spots, web pages, posters, etc.
  • Assist in student job placement and follow-up.
  • Develop and maintain a professional development plan; and, attend classes, workshops and seminars as needed to maintain professional license.
  • Assist in obtaining or maintaining accreditation for programs taught as assigned.
  • Accurately and punctually submit all forms and information needed for attendance and grade reporting.
  • Meet classes at the listed times.
  • Serve on institutional committees as needed.
  • Support college activities.
  • Attend division meetings and other meetings as required by the dean.
  • Teach at other centers or locations if needed.
  • Dismiss classes only with prior approval from the division dean.
  • Successfully complete important assessment work.
  • Observes the administrative policies for credentialed personnel as set forth by the KCKCC employee handbook.
  • Other related duties as assigned by appropriate administrator.
  • Possession of a valid Kansas driver’s license and/or be able to provide own transportation in conduct of work assignments; willingness to travel locally (mileage reimbursable.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervise students in the class setting and patrons on the clinical floor.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Employees in this position must have the ability to:

 

  • Stand for extended periods of time.
  • Enter data into a computer terminal/typewriter, operate standard office equipment, use a telephone; and read a computer screen and printed matter with or without vision aids.
  • Understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone.
  • Speak so that others may understand at normal levels and on the telephone.
  • Stand, walk and bend over, reach overhead, grasp, push, pull and move, lift and/or carry up to 25 pounds to waist height.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Employees in the position will be required to work indoors and come in direct contact with KCKCC, faculty, staff and the public.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Must possess current Kansas Cosmetology License and Instructor Licenses.
  • Must have an appreciation for the intent of the Cosmetology program relative to assisting individuals in the learning process.
  • Must possess knowledge of current cosmetology techniques and tools.
  • Must have knowledge of a variety of effective teaching strategies to engage and motivate
    learners.
  • Must be patient, flexible, and able to work with individuals with various backgrounds and
    abilities.
  • Must possess the ability to work as a team with other instructors in all other disciplines.
  • Must possess basic knowledge of Microsoft Office, filing, and copying.
  • Must understand the urban community college philosophy for the open-door concept.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Must possess current Kansas Cosmetology License and Instructor License.
  • Minimum of three years as a cosmetology instructor and two years work experience in the cosmetology industry.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must be able to lift 25 lbs. POSITION HOURS:  7:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., Monday-Friday (Summer hours are 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Thursday)

                                   

FLSA STATUS:        Exempt 

SALARY:                   Dependent on education and experience. (182-day position)
