Job Purpose

To teach Art Appreciation, a general introduction to the visual arts, media, techniques, and history. The course is designed to create a deeper appreciation of the creative processes involved in the visual arts. This course reviews two- and three-dimensional art forms, methods, and media; examines the visual elements and principles of design; and briefly surveys art styles from the prehistoric to the 20th Century. It is oriented to students who have not been exposed to the formal study of these disciplines. It is a beginning level class to familiar students with the different types of art and to learn how to speak/write intelligently about art. Hands -on art experiences are incorporated in the course. Three contact hours per week are required.  This is a POOL position. Application materials for this adjunct position accepted on an on-going basis due to increasing demand for courses in this subject area.

 

Position Description

  • Hold all class sessions according to schedule
  • Provide instruction, activities, assignments, and assessments to adequately cover the Art Department Student Learning Objectives for the specific course(s) taught
  • Use teaching methods that emphasize application, cooperation and collaboration and engage students actively in their studies, encouraging them to become independent learners with higher-order thinking skills
  • Organize and explain content using methods which are appropriate to students with differing abilities, levels of preparation, and cultural experience
  • Assign and provide feedback for in- and out-of-class work; monitor student progress
  • Perform adequate assessment and analysis of assessment according to college requirements
  • Reflect on and evaluate the effectiveness of one's own pedagogy
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

Position Qualifications and/or Education


Minimum Qualifications and/or Education

  • Master's Degree in Design or Art

Preferred Qualifications and/or Education

  • An MFA in Art
  • Teaching experience in an open enrollment, urban community college level
  • Experience with a Learning Management System such as Blackboard
  • Experience in learner-centered pedagogy

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, and sit. Work Schedule

Must be able to work a variable schedule/hour to meet operational needs. May require evening and weekend hours. Your appointment is contingent on enough enrollments, or on program and scheduling changes.
