The Adult Education Transition Instructor will be supervised by the Adult Education Assistant Director.  This position will assist Adult Education Program students with goal setting during their course of studies, career exploration, and post-secondary planning.  The post-secondary planning will include any program offered at the KCKCC campus, the AO-K initiative at the KCKCC TEC, and any other education or training program in which a student may have an interest.  This position requires knowledge of education and training programs in the community as well as the knowledge of the availability of jobs.    
FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Establish a working relationship with all KCKCC departments and divisions in order to be familiar with what is offered and what the course work involves.
  • Establish a working relationship with the Workforce Partnership Office to assist their staff in qualifying prospective students for any tuition assistance.
  • Participate in professional development as offered by the college, the Kansas Board of Regents, and Jobs for the Future (JFF).
  • Know and analyze the requirements of the Accuplacer Assessment and then assist Adult Education Program instructors with curricula that will prepare students for entry into college with few or no developmental courses.
  • Assist Adult Education Program instructors with implementation of WIOA requirements.
  • Assist students in identifying learning strategies and life skills necessary to be successful learners.
  • Assist students in setting and attaining goals.
  • Advise Adult Education Program students regarding academics, personal issues, obstacles to education, and enrollments in college.
  • Provide Adult Education Program students with in-depth information on local post-secondary programs and/or careers.
  • Facilitate Adult Education Program students in procuring KCKCC identification cards.
  • Conduct campus and TEC tours for Adult Education Program students.
  • Assist Adult Education Program students in setting dates to take the GED Test.
  • Provide information and study guides for the Accuplacer Test.
  • Assist students with financial aid and college admissions applications.
  • Contact students who have missed class so that those students do not miss important class work.
  • Assist students with special needs and contact the KCKCC Academic Resource Center for any accommodations necessary.
  • Assist instructors with implementation of any accommodations recommended by the Academic Resource Center.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Candidate must have an appreciation of the intent of the AEFLA (Adult and Family Literacy Act) Grant to serve students needing basic skills in order to progress to post-secondary education and a family sustaining wage career.
  • Candidate must understand the urban community college philosophy of the open-door concept.
  • Candidate must be patient, flexible, and able to work with individuals with various backgrounds and abilities.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
 
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Masters preferred, Special Education, Adult Education, a major in one of the academic areas of the Adult Education Program (Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies), or Social Work.
  • Two years of experience working full time in adult education environment preferred.
  • Two years of experience working full time with adult basic education students preferred.
 
SALARY: $28,380.00 (This salary is funded by the AEFLA Grant.  The AEFLA Grant is an annual renewal through the Kansas Board of Regents.)
