TECHNICAL ASSISTANT – BOOKSTORE (Textbook Buyer)

Reporting directly to the Director of the Bookstore, the Technical Assistant shall be responsible for assisting in the general day-to-day operations of the store including the purchasing and receiving of textbooks & related merchandise, and customer service on the sales floor and by phone.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Assist in the purchase of textbooks for resale; negotiating price, terms, and delivery with vendors; determining quality and quantity of product purchased; and ensuring prompt payment of invoices
  2. Implement and maintain inventory and fiscal controls of text related merchandise
  3. Coordinate the return of product to vendors for overstock, damaged or defective merchandise
  4. Manage the shipping and receiving of course materials
  5. Oversee the sales of textbooks through the stores website
  6. Assisting in website content maintenance
  7. Maintain the store appearance and cleanliness; consulting with custodial staff for cleaning of floors, windows, and trash pickup
  8. Assist customers on the sales floor, phone, e-mail, and website
  9. Assist cashiers during peak periods, breaks, and vacations
  10. Assist with processing and stocking of books purchased through book buyback
  11. Assist with annual bookstore inventory
  12. Open and close store as required
     

CONSULTING TASKS
  1. Assist the Director in the day-to-day operation of the college bookstore.
  2. Complete and accomplish all other duties as assigned by the Bookstore Director.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  1. Ability to work with minimal supervision and be able to prioritize and perform multiple tasks in order to support departmental goals
  2. Excellent oral and written communication skills; pleasant telephone demeanor; ability to relate helpfully and tactfully to a variety of people and questions
  3. Ability to work well under pressure (enrollment & buyback)
  4. Must possess accurate keyboarding skills and be able to efficiently and accurately enter data
  5. Must pass criminal background check
  6. Willingness and ability to be flexible in working hours and may be needed to work some evening or weekend hours.
 
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  1. High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree preferred
  2. 1-2 years’ experience working in a retail environment
  3. Entry level ability in Word and Excel software

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as the ability to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff. 

 
  1. Hearing ability sufficient to assist customers.
  2. Ability to lift 30 lbs.
  3. Visual ability sufficient to perform accounting procedures and make correct change at cash register.
 
 

SALARY:             $28,000 to $32,000, plus overtime, dependent on qualifications
