JOB PURPOSE:
The Part-Time Adult Education Instructor shall be responsible to the Assistant Adult Education Director and teach all subjects in adult education, as well as all aspects of adult education as required by the Adult and Family Literacy Act (AEFLA), the Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR), and Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC). The subjects include Math, Reading, Writing, Social Studies, Science, Technology, College and Workforce Preparation. Instruction will include adult students, 16 years of age and older, at all academic levels. This Part-Time Adult Education Instructor position, will work mornings and evenings.  Specifically, for KCKCC Main Campus and the new University of Kansas Hospital location.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach and/or tutor ALL aspects of classes, including writing, math, reading, social studies, science, technology, and workforce skills
  • Utilize learner-centered pedagogy to engage and motivate adult learners, addressing diverse learning modalities, abilities, needs & interests through differentiated instruction.
  • Use Blackboard to provide course/supplemental materials and communicate with students using course announcements, discussion boards and/or collaborate sessions.
  • Develop and submit contextualized lesson plans for all classes, each quarter, to include the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS), TABE Competencies and GED 2014.
  • Perform effectively in the learning environment by being prepared, maintaining discipline, and engaging students in the learning process.
  • Take daily attendance and submit attendance weekly for all classes.
  • Communicate with absent students via phone or email, record communication on shared contact log and submit weekly with attendance.
  • Advise with students during enrollment week and at a minimum every three weeks after that regarding test scores, goals, roadblocks, study resources, academic progress and other topics specific to individual students’ progress.
  • Adapt instruction based on summative & formative assessments to thoroughly prepare students to take the GED exam/TABE.
  • Prepare students to meet program goals (educational attainment, secure employment, retain/improve employment, transition to post-secondary, college readiness, citizenship skills, and other goals set forth by the program or the Kansas Board of Regents).
  • Support and guide, along with the Transition Instructor, students to enter post-secondary education, technical training or the workforce.
  • Prepare students to pass the AccuPlacer exam through lessons and study guides.
  • Evaluate and monitor all students’ progress using a variety of formative assessment tools (such as classroom observations, lesson closure discussion, portfolios, quizzes, and student error logs) and adjust instruction as necessary.
  • Maintain all necessary records for state and federal reports.
  • Administer assessments (TABE, NorthStar, etc.) to students as necessary or set forth by KBOR PAM (Proficiency Attainment Model).
  • Navigate and employ the use of the Adult Education Database-PABLO.
  • Supervise any volunteer tutors and help make appropriate assignments for tutors to work with students.
  • Attend and participate in all program orientations or guest speaker events.
  • Understand the use of all required enrollment paperwork as well as other program documents and forms necessary to maintain accurate records.
  • Engage in staff development activities with other adult education staff, both within and outside of KCKCC, during the academic year to enhance quality of instruction; earning the required minimum number of PD certificates set by KBOR.
  • Collaborates with other instructors and Assistant Director/Director about student attendance, behavior, and progress.
  • Communicates information/becomes the liaison between program class sessions (morning classes and evening classes)
  • Consults with Assistant Director/Director and other instructors concerning the purchase of books/materials and other items to enhance the Adult Education program.
  • Attends all team, staff, and division meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director/Director.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND/OR EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Adult Education, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Utilize learner-centered pedagogy within the classroom. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND/OR EDUCATION:

  • At least 1-2 years of experience working with Adult Education/Adult Learners.
  • Teaching experience, especially K-12.

SALARY RANGE:  $20.00 per hour. This is a non-faculty, 10 ½ month position, and contingent upon grant funding.

 

WORK SCHEDULE: 

KU:  Monday – Thursday 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.

 

Site hours at KCKCC Main Campus (7250 State Avenue)
8:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Mon-Thursday

OR

5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Monday –Wednesday
5:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Thursday

 

 

This position includes two (2) additional planning hours per week, Must be able to work a variable schedule/varying hours to meet operational needs. May require evening and weekend hours; as needed.
