Reporting directly to the Dean of Student Services, the Director of the Counseling and Advocacy Center shall be responsible for:
 
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
 
  1. Administer the Counseling and Advocacy Center and coordinate activities of the program.   Provide expertise in the overall management, supervision, strategic planning, budgeting and marketing of a multi-function Center that provides specialized services for students and members of the community.  Critical components of this role includes leadership in the areas of victim advocacy, general mental health counseling, substance abuse intervention, community outreach programs, and coordinating/collaborating in all endeavors to assist the underserved individuals in Wyandotte & Leavenworth Counties.
  2. Supervise counseling staff, manage departmental budget, provide assistance to special student populations to increase persistence and retention, partner with community agencies to create potential revenue streams, and serve on multiple community boards.
  3. Evaluate all projects/ programs undertaken as a part of the Counseling and Advocacy Center, such as:
  • Present, inform, disseminate and collaborate with the community organizations on topics such as substance abuse, tobacco and other harmful substances cessation, and problem gambling prevention.
    • Refer students to appropriate campus and/or community resources for financial assistance, medical resources, and victim assistance.
    • Offer support to LGBT students, and educate campus community on issues relevant to this special population.
    • Support the critical needs of Veterans, particularly for those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
    • Assemble an expansive library of books on personal growth and development.
    • Provide a centralized location for the Women’s Resource Center, which encompasses programming, resource library and services for women.
    • Offer free ”Brown Bag” programs and presentations on varied topics, ranging from self-improvement, health lifestyle options to bullying and sexual assault prevention.
    • Serve as the primary support center for victims of sexual harassment and sexual violation in compliance with mandates by Title IX of the Civil Rights Act.
    • Create and oversee a wide variety of groups, ranging from addiction recovery programs such as Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous, victim of domestic violence support groups, and groups designed to help loved ones cope with grief and loss.
    • Coordinate Dean of Student Services Emergency Fund for students in crisis, which includes management of dissemination of emergency funds for students as well as follow-up to ensure that student has been connected with community resources to assist with their crisis needs.
    • Collaborate with various campus groups in implementing, high impact and effective community events.
    • Provide services in conjunction with USD 500 schools.
 
  1. Advise students and prospective students about their general educational plans.
  2. Lead Behavioral Intervention team to address ongoing student crisis situations and develop strategies to emergency protocols.
  3. Establish and maintain positive relations with community agencies and organizations and maintain records of such contacts.
  4. Work with other Student Services Division personnel, faculty, staff and administrators to keep program services relevant to the needs of the adult learner.
  5. Manage the KCKCC Student Food Pantry and the Clothing Bank. This includes procuring donations of food and clothing, managing inventory, maintaining records, initiating food and clothing drives by working with various organizations on and off-campus as well as student co-curricular activities.
  6. Search for additional funding to enhance existing services, such as scholarships, tuition assistance grants, etc. with assistance from the College‘s Grant Writer.
  7. As the Center for Victim Advocacy, maintain familiarity with laws, and reporting guidelines for the following: Title IX Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence, Sexual Violence against Women Act, The Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act and the CLERY Act.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of Student Services.
 
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
  1. Keep position descriptions of all Counseling and Advocacy Center personnel current.
  2. Select, train and/or evaluate Counseling and Advocacy Center personnel on-going.
  3. Conduct Counseling and Advocacy Center personnel performance reviews.
  4. Provide leadership for the regularly scheduled Counseling and Advocacy Center meetings.
  5. Develop and monitor Counseling and Advocacy Center annual fund raising efforts.
  6. Represent and promote KCKCC in community, professional and educational settings.
  7. Serve on committees and perform other duties as assigned.
  8. Assist faculty and staff with enrollment related initiatives ad hoc.
  9. Develop a master calendar of Counseling and Advocacy Center activities in conjunction with the college calendar.

SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervisory responsibilities for Counseling and Advocacy Center staff and/or student workers.
 
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
 
  1. Must have technology skills including Microsoft Office and social media.
  2. Excellent oral and written communication skills
  3. Excellent organizational and time management skills with an emphasis on detail and planning programs, events.
  4. Superior interpersonal skills which facilitate working with individuals of various abilities and capabilities, from various ethnic, cultural and age groups on a consistent basis.
  5. Must have an understanding of the urban, comprehensive community college philosophy.
  6. Ability to work with minimum supervision. Ability to generate new ideas independently; must be a self-starter.
  7. Individual and group counseling experiences preferred.
  8. Ability to make group presentations and public appearances to represent the college.
  9. Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, administration and the general public.   
  10. Ability to organize and supervise effectively.
  11. Must be able to work under the pressures of deadlines.
 
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
 
  1. A Master’s degree in Counseling or Social Welfare, and appropriate current professional license in the state of Kansas.
  2. Minimum of two years’ experience working at a professional level in a post-secondary setting, i.e. Counseling, Advocacy Center - community college level preferred.
  3. Minimum of two years supervisory experience required.
  4. Individual and group counseling experiences preferred.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as the ability to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other college faculty, staff and students.
 
SALARY:                $61,500.00/plus fringe benefits
