Supervises: No direct administrative supervision but occasional task assignment/monitoring for a lab assistant, student classroom assistant, work-study helper, or student intern.

Job Purpose: This position is a full-time instructor for the Electrical Technology Program. The position will consist of providing instructional and development services at all levels of electrical technology.  Various instructional strategies will be used, including traditional classroom methods, hands-on demonstrations/participation, computer/web-based instruction, and/or various combinations of approaches.

 

Instructor will participate in curriculum development, support KCKCC marketing efforts, establish/coordinate an industry-based advisory board, and work to actively integrate alternative and renewable energy concepts into the electrical program. This position reports directly to the Technical Education Center Dean of Academic Workforce Programs

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide formal instruction and leadership in electrical technology.
  • Work 40 hours per week. (Release from some teaching is possible for special projects or noncredit training activities.)
  • Specify, select, install, operate, and maintain necessary equipment and/or training modules required to support the specific course(s) being taught within departmental budget restraints.
  • Preparing course syllabi addressing targeted student abilities, specific competencies, textbook requirements, grading/assessment methodology, course scheduling, and/or other items as required.
  • Provide regular, timely reports to students of academic performance including current grades in course(s) taught.
  • Establish and/or help maintain an industry-based advisory board in support of college-level electrical technology programs.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the program, division, and total institution by timely attendance and submission of required grade, attendance, or other miscellaneous reports to the administration.
  • Participate in marketing activities for the division and/or institution by interfacing with the college’s Public Information Director to provide supporting materials as required for the development of advertising promotions such as brochures, media spots, web pages, posters, etc.
  • Initiate and/or maintain the ongoing integration of alternative and renewable energy concepts into the electrical program.
  • Assist in student job placement and submit follow-up documentation.
  • Participate in professional development.
  • Assist in obtaining or maintaining accreditation for programs taught as assigned.
  • Submit required reports by deadlines.
  • Meet classes at the listed times.
  • Maintain regular, posted office hours, which will be up to 10 hours of office hours per week. This may vary depending on the nature of the work and other duties as assigned by the dean.
  • Serve on institutional committees as needed.
  • Support college activities
  • Perform departmental and divisional responsibilities.
  • Teach at other centers or locations if needed.
  • Dismiss classes only with prior approval from the division dean.
  • Successfully complete important assessment work.
  • Other related duties as assigned by appropriate administrator.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement assigned tasks in an effective and timely manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, other faculty, professional/classified staff, supervision, industrial advisory panels, and the public.
  • Information Technology abilities required: (Staff development and Training is offered on a regular basis.)
  • Ability to understand operating a personal computer within the KCKCC network environment.
  • Ability to use email.
  • Ability to perform basic functions of the college’s database (Datatel).
  • Ability to perform basic word processing using MS Word.
  • Ability to perform basic presentation functions using MS PowerPoint.
  • Ability to perform basic functions in current AutoCad or similar software.
  • Ability to perform basic WebAdvisor functions.
  • Must be fully computer literate and be able to operate a personal computer using the Microsoft Windows environment utilizing common Microsoft word processing, spreadsheet, and graphical presentation applications.
  • Must have excellent persuasive communications skills
  • A valid driver’s license and ability to drive college vehicles.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work with a variety of students and prepare them for a career in the industry.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Technology preferred
  • Must be a Journeyman Electrician. The Journeyman Electrician Certification must be from an accredited institution i.e. - International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers or The United States Department of Labor or Passing the Prometric Exam with documented third party hands-on experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years (10,000 clock hours) industry-related experience in AC & DC Motor Theory, Troubleshooting, Reading Electrical Diagrams (Schematics and Wiring), Conduit Bending, Motor Controls (3 Phase), Residential Wiring of 3-Way and 4 Way Switches, Circuit Breaker Panels (100 amp and above), Transformers, Layout of circuits, Motor & Power Control Centers and knowledge on the Current National Electrical Code required.
  • Teaching experience is preferred.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Indoor in a normal classroom and shop time as well as outdoors in either construction technology or advanced manufacturing setting. Work conditions can involve considerable exposure to temperature changes, noise, dust, or chemicals.
  • Working hours: Although position is salaried/exempt, 40 hours per week is considered a normal work load, but more hours are sometimes required for any salaried position. Hours are typically Monday through Friday during the day but alternate scheduling on evenings and weekends can be expected depending upon specific needs during a particular term.

  • A neat appearance and apparel appropriate to a classroom/shop environment are required.

SALARY:                 Dependent upon education and experience. (182 day Position)
