This Advising Coordinator for the Training for Employment grant (T4E) provides intensive academic guidance and advising for T4E participants whose academic goals include obtaining technical education credentials, certificates and/or transfer education through the Department of Labor TAACCCT grant awarded to KCKCC for its Training for Employment proposal. This position will operate in a manner designed to support the goals of the T4E grant by delivering high quality academic support services to students in the targeted programs, working collaboratively with KCKCC T4E personnel, and making effective use of technology.  The successful applicant must have good interpersonal communication skills and an ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.  This is a grant-funded position, which will be sustained by KCKCC after the duration of the grant.  The T4E Advising Coordinator will report directly to the T4E Project Manager and work collaboratively with the KCKCC Director of the Student Advising Center.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
  1. Provide comprehensive academic advising services to a diverse student population, assist students with choosing realistic educational objectives and programs, and provide assistance with preparation for transfer to a four- year institution if included in student goals.
  2. Work collaboratively with the Director of the Student Advising Center, other KCKCC personnel, and T4E staff to implement and promote participant retention efforts.
  3. Provide accurate and timely advice to participants regarding scheduling, attendance, academic progress, curriculum changes, and college and grant policies by meeting individually with participants and through group sessions.
  4. Perform certificate and degree checks for potential graduates across the range of training areas and programs with a special focus on stacking and latticing credentials as outlined in the T4E grant.
  5. Provide monthly progress reports of advisor/advisee placement activities to the T4E Project Manager.
  6. Provide quality academic advising that includes assessment of individuals' education and training, prior learning experiences, work habits, interests, skills, personal traits, and physical capabilities.
  7. Analyze and interpret assessment information in reading, writing, and math for incoming and continuing participants, including participants for whom English is not a primary language.
  8. Work directly with veterans and their spouses and TAA-affected workers.
  9. Inform participants of available support services and provide assistance, as needed, in accessing them. Make appropriate referrals.
  10. Provide specialized and intrusive advising interventions for all T4E participants potentially deemed to be at academic risk, including but not limited to first generation participants, non-traditional adult learners, and English language (ESOL) learners.
  11. Consult with T4E faculty and grant personnel on program- and course-related issues.
  12. Assist the Institutional Research/Data Tracking Coordinator with collecting and analyzing participant retention and advising-related data and preparing periodic reports.
  13. Assist with T4E orientation programs, activities, advising, and assessment for new and potential participants.
  14. Serve on institutional committees as assigned.
  15. Maintain confidentiality in all matters pertaining to participant records, the T4E grant, and the Student Advising Center.
  16. Occasionally work evening and extended hours for special events.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned by the T4E Project Manager.
 
CONSULTING TASKS

May consult with T4E personnel, participants, staff, and faculty.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
 
  1. Effective written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  2. Organized, participant-centered, detail-oriented self-starter, team player.
  3. Demonstrated understanding and successful experience in working with diverse populations of adult learners.
  4. Effective abilities using computer and office hardware, Microsoft© Office Suite software, and Internet applications to support data mining and personal productivity.
  5. Must be able to learn and operate project management and project participant software.
 
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
 
  1. Bachelor’s degree in education, student support services, educational administration, or a closely related field.
  2. Two years of experience reasonably related to position responsibilities. Experience in a postsecondary educational setting preferred. Community and/or technical college experience a plus.
  3. Experience working with federal grants and grant reporting preferred.

SALARY:                     $33,124.33/yr, plus fringe benefits
(If a current KCKCC employee is selected for this position, consideration will be given to his/her current salary.)
