Job title: Full Time English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor

Reports to: Assistant Director of Adult Education

Job Purpose: The Adult Education Instructor shall be responsible to the Assistant Director.  The English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor teaches all areas of English as a Second Language including speaking, listening, reading and writing of English, Civics, Math, Employability Skills, Technology and Transitions to Post-Secondary.  Instruction will include adult students at all academic levels.


ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach and/or tutor all aspects of English as a Second Language including speaking, listening, reading, and writing, as well as math, civics, employability skills, technology, and transition classes to post-secondary education.
  • Develop and submit contextualized lesson plans for all classes and/or a direct self-study program for individual students
  • Use Blackboard to provide course/supplemental materials and communicate with students using course announcements, discussion boards and/or collaborative sessions
  • Utilize a variety of effect teaching strategies to engage and motivate adult learners.
  • Communicate with absent students via phone or email, and record communication on shared contact log.
  • Advise with students during enrollment week and at a minimum every three weeks thereafter regarding test scores, goals, roadblocks, study resources, academic progress and other topics specific to individual students
  • Prepare students to meet program goals (educational attainment, secure employment, retain/improve employment, transition to post-secondary, college readiness, citizenship skills, and other goals set forth by the program or the Kansas Board of Regents)
  • Evaluate and monitor all students’ progress
  • Maintain all necessary records for state and federal reports
  • Administer assessments (TABE, NorthStar, etc.) to students as necessary or set forth by KBOR PAM(Proficiency Attainment Model).
  • Navigate and employ the use of the Adult Education Database-PABLO
  • Supervise any volunteer tutors and help make appropriate assignments for tutors to work with students.
  • Understand the use of all required enrollment paperwork as well as other program documents and forms necessary to maintain accurate records
  • Engage in staff development activities with other adult education staff during the academic year to enhance quality of instruction; earning the required number of PD certificates/hours
  • Collaborate with other instructors and Assistant Director about student attendance, behavior and progress
  • Consults with Assistant Director and other instructors concerning the purchase of books/materials and other items to enhance the Adult Education program
  • Attend all team, staff and division meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Must have appreciation for the intent of the Adult Education Program relative to assisting individuals in the learning process
  • Must be patient, flexible, and able to work with individuals with various backgrounds and abilities
  • Must possess the ability to work as a team with other instructors in all other disciplines
  • Must understand the urban community college philosophy of the open-door concept
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must have a working knowledge of MS Office Suite


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Adult Education or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred
  • At least 1-2 years of experience working with Adult Education/Adult Learners preferred

SALARY:                 $27,520.00


SCHEDULE:

Site hours:                    7:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Monday – Thursday

                                    5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m Monday – Wednesday
 

Instructional hours:       8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.  Monday – Thursday

                                    5:30 p.m – 8:30 p.m. Monday – Wednesday

 

Planning hours:            7:30 a.m, -- 8:30 a.m. Monday – Thursday

                                    5:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. & 8:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Monday – Wednesday

                                    This position includes two (2) additional planning hours per week.
