ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAM INSTRUCTOR – Full Time

The Adult Education Instructor shall be responsible to the Director of Continuing Education and Community Services and teach all areas of English as a Second Language in adult education.  The areas include Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing of English, Civics, Math, Employability Skills, Technology, and Transitions to Post Secondary.  Instruction will include adult students at all academic levels.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Teach all aspects of English as a second language including speaking, listening, reading, and writing, as well as math, civics, employability skills, technology, and transition classes to post-secondary education.
  • Prepare lesson plans for all classes and/or a direct self-study program for individual students.
  • Utilize a variety of effective teaching strategies to engage and motivate adult learners.
  • Evaluate and monitor all students’ progress.
  • Keep all necessary records for state and federal reports.
  • Learn to administer and administer the TABE Assessment System.
  • Administer assessments to students as necessary.
  • Attend monthly Adult Education Program staff meetings.
  • Attend program specific team meetings.
  • Develop quarter plans for each class taught during all quarters.
  • Learn and utilize the KBOR PABLO Data Base System.
  • Review C2 PABLO reports on a monthly basis.
  • Supervise any volunteer tutors and help make appropriate assignments for tutors to work with students.
  • Attend staff development activities with other adult education staff during the year to enhance quality of instruction.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director.
 
CONSULTING TASKS:
  • Consult with other instructors and Director about student progress.
  • Consult with Director and other instructors concerning the purchase of books/materials and other items to enhance the program.
 
SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Supervise any volunteer tutors concerning instructional techniques and course content information.
 
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Must have an appreciation for the intent of the Adult Education Program relative to assisting individuals in the learning process.
  • Must be patient, flexible, and able to work with individuals with various backgrounds and abilities.
  • Must understand the urban community college philosophy of the open-door concept.
 
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • At least 1-2 years of experience working with Adult Education/Adult Learners
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Adult Education or a related field, Masters preferred

  2. Employee may frequently lift and/or move up to 10 lbs.
  3. Must be able to communicate effectively to present information to students and to respond to questions.
 
SCHEDULE:   Instructional Hours: 8:30 am -12:00 pm, Monday – Thursday
                        5:30 pm-8:30 pm, Monday - Wednesday
 
                        Site Hours: 8:00 – 8:30, 12:00 – 12:30 am, Monday – Thursday
                        5:00 – 5:30 pm and 8:30 – 9:00 pm, Monday -Wednesday
 
                        Planning Hours: The position includes three planning hours per week.
                        Total Hours: 35 hours per week for 43 weeks
 
SALARY:           $29,400 yearly, Plus Fringe Benefits.  This is a grant-funded position.
