Job title: Part-Time Lab Assistant –Paramedic

Reports to: Director

Position type: Part-Time, average of 10 hours per week, no more than 29 hours per week

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Job Purpose: Provide instructional support to faculty in lab sessions.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide technical guidance in the performance of specific educational tasks in EMR, EMT and Paramedic courses.
  • Observe and document student performance of tasks assigned by the instructor(s), (i.e. patient assessment, fracture management, running scenarios and simulations).
  • Ensure safety practices are followed by students.
  • Follow required safety procedures in handling of needles and waste products.
  • Monitor student use of college owned simulation mannequins and equipment used by students, report when equipment is malfunctioning, needing repair or replacement.
  • Enforcing all rules and regulations, per the program and college’s guidelines and other enforcement agencies that govern student practices of KCKCC.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the respective supervisor or director.
  • Set up and tear down practical skill stations.
  • Paramedic Lab Assistants must be able to work effectively in scenario/simulation based education (evaluate students critical thinking, discuss the pathophysiology of scenarios, guide students through debriefings of scenarios and provide appropriate feedback for student growth).
  • Paramedic Lab Assistants must be capable of instructing EMR/EMT students at the appropriate curriculum level. 
  • Work schedule will be part-time, maximum of 29 hours per week with an average of 10 hours per week.
  • Must be able to work day and evening classes and an occasional weekend day.
  • Work a minimum of 45 hours per semester to continue employment.
  • May consult with program faculty, staff and students.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Must know and be able to teach proper techniques in EMS using efficient communication                             skills.
  • Must have the ability to work with individuals of various backgrounds and abilities.
  • Applicant must be able to lift 100lbs. on a regular basis.
  • Applicant must be able to work mornings, afternoons, and evenings with an occasional weekend day.
  • Applicant must be caring and compassionate, must be able to evaluate students to gauge                           competency levels.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Certification by the Kansas Board of EMS as a Paramedic.
  • Applicant must have experience at their certification level in a clinical or field setting.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree of higher preferred.
  • Applicant must have proper knowledge of radio communications.
  • Applicant must have excellent working knowledge of EMS operations and ICS/IMS.
  • Applicant must have BLS certification. Additional certifications in cardiac, pediatric and trauma care helpful.
  • Instructor certification helpful.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as the ability to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.

            1.  Employee is regularly required to talk to student or hear responses from students or faculty.

            2.  Employee regularly is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands/fingers to handle or feel objects                                   such as tools, keyboards, mannequins, etc., and reach with hands and arms to push or pull                                           equipment.

            3.  Employee must be able to life 100 pounds such as emergency bag, equipment mannequins or                               books.

SALARY:   Current salary based on certification at the Paramedic level.

(If a current KCKCC employee is selected for this position, consideration will be given to current salary.)
