FULL-TIME READ INSTRUCTOR/COORDINATOR

Kansas City Kansas Community College is seeking an individual to teach classes in reading (READ) beginning Fall, 2016. The primary goal for the reading program is to develop cognitive skills that prepare students for success in transfer-level courses in all disciplines. This position will be responsible for leading all aspects of the READ program and report directly to the Dean of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. The teaching load consists of 30 credit hours for the two-semester academic year but will receive 3 hours of reassigned time per semester for coordination. Additional opportunities for teaching during the summer may be available.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
Instructional
 
  • Teach READ courses with clear and measurable objectives, using culturally inclusive strategies in the affective, cognitive, and kinesthetic domains.
  • Support student success through advising as well as understanding and utilizing diverse pedagogies, forms of assessment, and feedback techniques.
  • Meet the educational needs of a diverse population through the development of cognitive skills leading to student success, retention, and completion.
  • Collaborate with other instructors in all areas of the college to ensure developmental curriculum aligns with transfer-level courses and enables a seamless transition for students.
  • Utilize data and analytics at the local, state, and national levels to continuously improve strategies for student success, retention, and completion.
  • Demonstrate ongoing professional development while sustaining desirable classroom results.
  • Create opportunities for acceleration through the program by demonstrated proficiency.
  • Establish rapport with students having a record of academic challenges and motivate students to develop skills for transitioning to transfer-level courses.
  • Design, collaborate, and implement strategies that will effectively increase student success, retention, and completion.
  • Serve on division and college-wide committees.
  • Collaborate fully with students, faculty, and administrators, placing student success at the center of all decision-making.
Program Coordination
 
  • Coordinate and mentor adjunct faculty and tutors, ensuring alignment of skills between developmental and transfer-level courses.
  • Review adjunct applications and participate in the interview process, gathering a team capable of delivering a high-quality curriculum.
  • Draft a robust schedule to serve projected enrollments, remaining open to revision as necessary.
  • Research and prepare budget, technology, and facilities requests according to college guidelines in support of program goals.
  • Exercise fiscal responsibility in daily operations, planning expenditures, etc.
  • Oversee all aspects of long-range planning and ongoing program development.
  • Participate in coordinators' meetings and college training as appropriate.
  • Design and execute strategic recruitment and outreach activities, seeking and participating in effective opportunities for program promotion.
 
 
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
  • Seek opportunities to engage student’s on- and off-campus.
  • Arrange field experiences and/or visiting scholars as appropriate.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.
 
CONSULTING TASKS
 
  • Collaborate with the Testing Center, Student Advising Center, and Academic Resource Center, creating workshops, study groups, etc. to assist developmental students in academic success, retention and completion.
  • Partner with the Center for Research and Community Development to monitor student outcomes and prepare reports as needed by the college and other agencies.
  • Consult with students, faculty, administrators, and staff in support of program, division, and college-wide initiatives.
 
SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES
 
  • Coordinate and mentor adjunct faculty and tutors in the READ program.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
 
  • College-level teaching experience in reading to adult learners required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary teaching and learning initiatives required.
  • Understanding of and ability to effectively apply current reading methodology, assessment and develop curriculum based in these required.
  • Experience utilizing instructional technology and multimedia applications to meet students' needs.
  • Ability to perform well in an urban community college serving a diverse population required.
  • Documented record of establishing and maintaining appropriate professional relationships required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with colleagues of diverse backgrounds at the department, division, college, and community levels required.
 
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
 
  • A Master's degree in Reading, Post-Secondary Literacy, Developmental Studies, or similar required; PhD in the field preferred.
  • Experience teaching and relating to individuals from diverse academic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds required.
  • Demonstrated understanding and implementation of student-centered pedagogy and active learning strategies preferred.
  • Superior interpersonal skills, demonstrated by the ability to collaborate with students, faculty, staff, and community members preferred.
  • Preference may be given to persons experienced in assisting English Language Learners transition to transfer-level courses.

EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: EXEMPT, 541.3
 
COMPENSATION:   Commensurate with education and experience per the Master Contract.
