TRIO LEARNING SPECIALIST MATH (GRANT FUNDED) – PART-TIME

This position is part-time, up to 20 hours a week. The TRIO Learning Specialist (Math) will assist and tutor students though math, assess student skill levels, design individual programs of study, evaluate the progress and facilitate the student’s on-going progress, transition into the next phase of their education process, build a strong relationship with each course professor and build a strong relationship with the Math Tutoring Coordinator in the Academic Resource Center (ARC). The overall purpose is to assist and intervene with support services for academic success and retention.     

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Assign extensive multiple work assignments.
  2. Design, monitor and coordinate the tutoring procedures for Math students.
  3. Design individualized programs to assist students in Math.
  4. Provide KCKCC TRiO SSS students with subject matter tutoring.
  5. Work closely with the tutoring staff in the ARC.
  6. Work closely with the KCKCC Math department.
  7. Assist project students with education goal formation.
  8. Evaluate the students’ progress and provide intervention and feedback.
  9. Design and teach academic related workshops to KCKCC TRiO SSS students.
  10. Document on-going student contact logs via computerized database.
  11. Coordinate with Math Instructors to have up to date resources (ie:  books,
    syllabi, software, etc).  
  12. Assist in the 8 week progress report and makes intervention calls and/or email contacts to address needs.
  13. Conduct individual intake sessions to collect appropriate student documentation and to develop and establish individualized learning plans for each participant.
  14. Equip TRiO SSS students with the academic and personal tools and skills that will help them persist in college until attaining a degree.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned

CONSULTING TASKS:
 
  1. Consulting with faculty concerning students’ lack of progress, when appropriate.
  2. Consult with the Director or Transition Coordinator regarding progress of developmental math students utilizing Tutoring Services.
  3. Consulting with ARC staff for assistance with unique student situations.
  4. Assisting with the college’s compliance with FERPA and other federal regulations.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  1. Ability to make a determination of students’ problems with math, and develop and implement a plan to provide necessary assistance. 
  2. Ability to maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA required.
  3. Ability to work with a variety of individuals, including students, staff and faculty with an understanding and an appreciation for the philosophy and mission of an urban, open-door, comprehensive community college.
  4. Must be able to communicate and work with individuals with varying abilities and capabilities.
  5. Flexibility a must.
  6. Must possess strong written and oral communication skills.
  7. Must be able to learn new technology quickly.
  8. Ability to work with other Peer Tutors, staff, and faculty.
  9. Ability to work with two or more tutees in a tutoring session.
  10. Ability to establish a supportive relationship with tutees.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


Ability to sufficiently operate computer and office equipment, with or without reasonable accommodation.
 
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit. Occasionally the employee will bend or twist at the neck more than the average person. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 10 lbs., such as boxes of books. The employee is directly responsible for safety and well-being of students.
 
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and staff.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
 
  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Math required-Masters preferred.
  2. Three to five (3-5) years’ experience in teaching or providing support services preferred.
  3. Coursework in education, curriculum, or adult learning styles preferred.
  4. Experience in post-secondary setting preferred.

SALARY:                       $25 an hour
