This position is a full-time instructor for the Construction Technology Program. The position will consist of providing instructional and development services at all levels of construction technology as established by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) for its curriculum and certification guidelines. Various instructional strategies will be used, including traditional classroom methods, hands-on demonstrations/participation, computer/web-based instruction, and/or various combinations of approaches.
 
Instructor will participate in curriculum development, support KCKCC marketing efforts, coordinate NCCER certification activities, establish/coordinate an industry-based advisory board, and work to actively integrate alternative and renewable energy concepts into both the construction program.
 
FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
 
 
  1. Provide formal instruction and leadership in construction technology and advanced manufacturing technology as assigned utilizing NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research) curriculum and materials.
  2. Work 40 hours per week. (Release from some teaching is possible for special projects or noncredit training activities.)
  3. Specify, select, install, operate, and maintain necessary equipment and/or training modules required to support the specific course(s) being taught within departmental budget restraints.
  4. Prepare course syllabi addressing targeted student abilities, specific competencies, textbook requirements, grading/assessment methodology, course scheduling, and/or other items as required.
  5. Provide regular, timely reports to students of academic performance including current grades in course(s) taught.
  6. Establish and/or maintain an industry-based advisory board in support of college-level construction technology and advanced manufacturing technology programs.
  7. Complete and submit all required NCCER certification/documentation forms in a timely manner as stipulated by the college’s NCCER sponsor.
  8. Coordinate and monitor the submission of all required NCCER certification/documentation forms by other NCCER-certified instructors at the college.
  9. Demonstrate commitment to the program, division, and total institution by timely attendance and submission of required grade, attendance, or other miscellaneous reports to the administration.
  10. Participate in marketing activities for the division and/or institution by interfacing with the college’s Public Information Director to provide supporting materials as required for the development of advertising promotions such as brochures, media spots, web pages, posters, etc.
  11. Initiate and/or maintain the ongoing integration of alternative and renewable energy concepts into the construction program.
  12. Show ability/willingness to teach online.
  13. Assist in student job placement and follow-up.
  14. Develop and maintain a professional development plan.
  15. Assist in obtaining or maintaining accreditation for programs taught as assigned.
  16. Submit required reports by deadlines.          
  17. Meet classes at the listed times.
  18. Maintain regular, posted office hours, which will be up to 10 hours of office hours per week. This may vary depending on the nature of the work and other duties as assigned by the dean.
  19. Serve on institutional committees as needed.
  20. Support college activities
  21. Perform departmental and divisional responsibilities.
  22. Teach at other centers or locations if needed.
  23. Dismiss classes only with prior approval from the division dean.
  24. Successfully complete important assessment work.
  25. Other related duties as assigned by appropriate administrator.
 
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
 
No direct administrative supervision but occasional task assignment/monitoring for an administrative assistant, student classroom assistant, work-study helper, or student intern.
 
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
 
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
 
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS
 
 
  1. Must have or qualify to obtain NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research) certification in applicable construction technology subject areas.
  2. Ability to plan, organize, and implement assigned tasks in an effective and timely manner.
  3. Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, other faculty, professional/classified staff, supervision, industrial advisory panels, and the public.
  4. Information Technology abilities required: (Staff development and Training is offered on a regular basis.)
  • Ability to understand operating a personal computer within the KCKCC network environment.
  • Ability to use email.
  • Ability and willingness to teach online courses.
  • Ability to perform basic functions of the college’s database (Datatel).
  • Ability to perform basic word processing using MS Word.
  • Ability to perform basic presentation functions using MS PowerPoint.
  • Ability to perform basic functions in current AutoCad or similar software.
  • Ability to perform basic WebAdvisor functions.
  • Must be fully computer literate and be able to operate a personal computer using the Microsoft Windows environment utilizing common Microsoft word processing, spreadsheet, and graphical presentation applications.
  1. Applicant must be able to specify, select, inventory, install, operate, and maintain all equipment specified in NCCER materials applicable to the areas being taught.
 WORKING CONDITIONS
 
 
  1. Indoor in a normal classroom and shop time as well as outdoors in either construction technology or advanced manufacturing setting. Work conditions can involve considerable exposure to temperature changes, noise, dust, or chemicals.
  2. Working hours: Although position is salaried/exempt, 40 hours per week is considered a normal work load, but more hours are sometimes required for any salaried position. Hours are typically Monday through Friday during the day but alternate scheduling on evenings and weekends can be expected depending upon specific needs during a particular term.
  3. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
  4. A neat appearance and apparel appropriate to a classroom/shop environment are required.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
 
 
  1. Work involves the setup and operation of potentially hazardous equipment and machinery as well as the occasional lifting and moving of construction and manufacturing components and materials requiring the lifting of at least 50 pounds. Mobility within the classroom and shop are required.
  2. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is routinely required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, or crouch; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision for the assembly of parts and for the avoidance of mechanical and electrical hazards.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of people, including staff, students, and the general public, in both written and oral mediums.
  4. The position requires the ability to read and understand technical journals and similar publications.
  5. The position requires the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions.
 
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
 
 
  1. Bachelor’s degree in Construction Technology preferred
  2. Five years of directly applicable experience in Construction Technology required.
  3. Teaching experience is preferred.
 
SALARY:       Dependent upon education and experience.
