FULL-TIME ESOL INSTRUCTOR/COORDINATOR

Kansas City Kansas Community College is seeking an individual to teach classes in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) beginning Fall, 2016. This person will be responsible for all aspects of the program and report directly to the Dean of Humanities and Fine Arts. The teaching load will consist of 30 credit hours for the two-semester academic year but will receive 3 hours of reassigned time per semester for coordinating activities. Additional opportunities for teaching during the summer may be available.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
Instructional
 
  • Teach ESOL courses with clear and measurable objectives.
  • Prepare instructional materials, such as syllabi, course outlines, examinations, et al.
  • Maintain a student-oriented approach to education, including recruitment, advising, etc.
  • Create and revise curriculum and assessments to enhance program effectiveness.
  • Demonstrate ongoing professional development while sustaining desirable classroom results.
  • Create opportunities for acceleration through the program by demonstrated proficiency.
  • Establish and nurture a high profile in community activities that address needs of non-English speaking residents.
  • Develop and enhance mutually beneficial partnerships with area high school counselors, community education professionals, and businesses.
  • Serve on division and college-wide committees.
  • Collaborate fully with students, faculty, administrators, businesses, and community organizations.
 
 
  • Program Coordination
  • Assist in coordinating adjunct faculty and tutors to ensure alignment between courses.
  • Establish and maintain an effective program of recruitment and outreach.
  • Make appropriate recommendations regarding schedule preparation and revision as necessary.
  • Research and prepare budget, technology and facilities requests according to college guidelines.
  • Exercise fiscal responsibility in daily operations, planning expenditures, etc.
  • Oversee all aspects of long-range planning and ongoing program development.
 
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
  • Seek opportunities to engage ESOL student’s on- and off-campus.
  • Arrange field experiences and/or visiting scholars as appropriate.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.
 
CONSULTING TASKS
 
  • Advise the Student Organization of Latinos (SOL) and the International Student Organization (ISO).
  • Consult with students, faculty, administrators, and staff in support of program, division, and college-wide initiatives.
 

 
 
SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES
 
  • Coordinate adjunct faculty and tutors in the ESOL program.
 
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
 
  • College-level ESOL teaching experience required.
  • Demonstrated participation in interdisciplinary teaching and learning initiatives required.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development and trends, especially regarding expedited assimilation.
  • Ability to perform well in an urban community college serving a diverse population required.
  • Documented record of establishing and maintaining appropriate professional relationships.
  • Knowledge of classroom technology best practices as related to language acquisition.
 
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
 
  • A Master's degree in ESOL is required; PhD in the field is preferred.
  • Experience teaching and relating to individuals from diverse academic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds required.
  • Preference may be given to persons fluent in a second language, especially Spanish.

COMPENSATION:      Commensurate with education and experience per the Master Contract.
