PT LAB ASSISTANT – FIRE SCIENCE

Reports directly to the Fire Science Coordinator, the Assistants shall work with and assist the Fire Science and Hazardous Materials Instructors in the following areas:
 
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
  1. Provide technical guidance in the performance of specific tasks in Fire Science and Hazardous Materials courses
  2. Observe and document student performance of tasks assigned by Fire Science Instructors
  3. Ensure safety practices are followed by students
  4. Follow required pollution prevention procedures in the handling of chemicals and waste products
  5. Maintain records of repair orders for proper accountability of parts and materials
  6. Maintain control of college owned specialty tools and equipment used by students
  7. Enforce all rules and regulations, per the college’s guidelines and other enforcement agencies that govern student practices of KCKCC
  8. Be responsible for the transportation of students during field trips per the College’s policies and guidelines
  9. Travel with students to off campus activities
  10. Perform other duties as assigned by the respective instructor
  11. Work schedule will be part-time, 10 hours or less per week

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
 
  1. Able to teach proper and correct techniques in Firefighting
  2. Ability to work with individuals of various backgrounds and abilities
  3. Understand the philosophy of the urban, open-door community college
  4. Able to lift 100 lbs on a regular basis
  5. Willing to work afternoons and evenings
 
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
 
  1. Must have 3-5 years’ experience as a Firefighter/ Hazardous Materials Certified performing the varied duties in the site environment
  2. High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree preferred
  3. Certification in Firefighter I, Firefighter II, and Hazardous Materials Operations required
  4. Certification in Emergency Medical Technician preferred
  5. Applicant must be competent in donning and doffing of SCBA/PPE
  6. Applicant must be competent in ladder safety.
  7. Applicant must have excellent working knowledge of fire ground operations and ICS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit.  Occasionally the employee will bend or twist at the neck more than the average person.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift items.  The employee is directly responsible for safety, wellbeing, and work output.
 
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as the ability to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
 
  1. Must be able to stand, walk, or sit for long periods of time
  2. Must be able to use hands/fingers to handle or feel objects such as tools, keyboards, etc.
  3. Must be able to reach objects or items with hands and arms extended
  4. Must be able to talk or hear to interact with students, faculty or staff
 
SALARY:        $21.85/hour (maximum 10 hours per week)
(If a current KCKCC employee is selected for this position, consideration will be given to his/her current salary.)
