The Adult Education Instructor shall be responsible to the Assistant Adult Education Director and teach all subjects in adult education as well as all aspects of adult education as required by the Adult and Family Literacy Act (AEFLA), the Kansas Board of Regents, and Kansas City Kansas Community College.  The instruction will include adult students, 16 years of age and older, at all academic levels.
FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBLILITIES:
  • Teach adult education classes in the subjects of reading, language arts, math, social studies, and science.
  • Prepare lesson plans for all classes and/or direct self-study program for individual students.
  • Administer the TABE Assessment System as prescribed by AEFLA, KBOR, TABE, and KCKCC.
  • Prepare students of all academic levels using the College and Career Ready Standards (CCRS) for the GED Test and for enrollment in post-secondary education.
  • Advise with students at enrollment and at least every three weeks following enrollment or as needed during a class session.
  • Learn how to use the KBOR PABLO data system in order to track student data and turn in C2 reports monthly.
  • Attend a minimum of one staff meeting per quarter, preferably all staff meetings that are held at a time to be determined by the team.
  • Attend and participate in weekly team meetings to stay up to date with all workings of the program.
  • Develop student quarter plans each quarter and submit them on or before the due date.   
  • Develop contextualized lesson plans in all subject areas so that students will understand the use of their learning in the workplace and be better able to better apply their learning in the workplace.
  • Attend staff development activities during the academic year to enhance quality of instruction.
  • Attend CCRS training as offered by the Kansas Board of Regents.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Must have an appreciation for the intent of the Adult Education Program relative to assisting individuals in the learning process.
  • Must have knowledge of a variety of effective teaching strategies to engage and motivate adult learners.
  • Must have college level knowledge of language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies content in order to be an effective instructor who prepares students for college level curriculum.
  • Must be patient, flexible, and able to work with individuals with various backgrounds and abilities.
  • Must understand the urban community college philosophy of the open-door concept.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have a working knowledge of MS Office Suite.
 
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Masters preferred, Adult Education, a field of program content emphasis, or a related field.
  • Two years of experience working in the adult education environment preferred.
  • Two years of experience working with adult basic education students preferred.
 
SALARY:  $12,040.00

SCHEDULE: Evenings:  Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Instruction time:  5:30 to 8:30 pm.
Planning and class preparation: 5 hours per week, 5:00 to 5:30 and 8:30 to 9:00 pm each evening, plus 2 additional hours for planning.
