PART-TIME PROFESSIONAL MATH TUTOR

This position reports directly to the Assistant Director of the Academic Resource Center and shall provide group and one-on-one math tutoring to any enrolled student. This posting is for one tutor that will work from 1:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and will entail working some Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.  The employee will not work more than 29 hours per week. Flexible work hours including evenings and weekends are a must.
 
FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Provide group and individual math tutoring to drop-in students who are currently enrolled in KCKCC Math courses. (90% of functional responsibilities are devoted to tutoring).
  2. Provide one-on-one assistance to students who need intensive tutoring in Math courses.
  3. Recommend software programs and additional technology that will benefit students who require math tutoring.
  4. Develop a supportive relationship with assigned students.
  5. Conduct classroom visits to share services with students and faculty.
  6. Develop and facilitate workshops to support student learning.
  7. Create and maintain handouts to assist in student learning within accordance of Copyright law.
  8. Participate in ongoing tutor training.
  9. Prepare and submit to Assistant Director a monthly report detailing services provided.
  10. Inform Assistant Director of any problems.
  11. Be available to work some evenings and Saturdays, as needed.
  12. Performing other duties as assigned.
 
CONSULTING TASKS:
  1. Consult with faculty concerning students’ lack of progress, when appropriate.
  2. Consult with ARC staff for assistance with unique student situations.
  3. Assisting with the college’s compliance with FERPA and other federal regulations.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Ability to make a determination of students’ problems with math, and develop and implement a plan to provide necessary assistance.
  2. Ability to maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA required.
  3. Ability to work with a variety of individuals, including students, staff and faculty with an understanding and an appreciation for the philosophy and mission of an urban, open-door, comprehensive community college.
  4. Must be able to communicate and work with individuals with varying abilities and capabilities.
  5. Must possess strong written and oral communication skills.
  6. Must be able to learn new technology quickly.
  7. Ability to work with other Tutors, Peer Tutors, staff, and faculty.
  8. Ability to work with two or more tutees in a tutoring session.
  9. Ability to establish a supportive relationship with tutees.
  10. Ability to sufficiently operate computer and office equipment, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit. Occasionally the employee will bend or twist at the neck more than the average person. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 10 lbs., such as boxes of books. The employee is directly responsible for safety and well-being of students.
 
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and staff.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Math, or related field required.  Master’s Degree is preferred. Consideration will be provided for candidates with secondary teaching certification in math and/or a minimum of 12 credit hours of college credit in math.
  2. One to three (1-3) years’ experience in teaching, tutoring, or providing support services in an academic setting preferred.
  3. Experience in post-secondary setting preferred.
  4. Experience teaching and/or tutoring developmental math courses preferred.
