The Resident Assistant is a live-in position that requires planning, coordinating, and implementing activities involving the students in the KCKCC Student Housing. The Resident Assistant plays a critical role in assisting KCKCC students in having a positive residential experience. The Resident Assistant is responsible for responding to apartment maintenance requests, coordinating activities that focus on community building among residents, and ensuring that College behavioral policies are followed.


 
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
  • Report to the Supervisor of Student Housing, in the Division of Student Services.
  • Respond to resident needs within a designated area of the Student Housing Complex.
  • Share overall responsibility for the entire Complex on a rotating schedule with other R.A.’s. During this time, R.A.’s must be present at the facility.
  • Encourage the social and academic success of all residents through planned programs and activities.
  • Provide support and assistance to residents by responding appropriately to all crisis and emergency situations and conducting necessary follow-up.
  • Assist residents, visitors, parents, and College staff regarding Student Housing policies and procedures.
  • Handle both routine and emergency maintenance requests in all areas of the Student Housing Complex.
  • Enforce all policies regarding acceptable resident behavior in compliance with the KCKCC Student Code of Conduct and Student Housing Contract and Handbook.
 
As the responsibilities of the position requires are significant, RAs may not hold other employment at the college or off-campus.
 
CONSULTING TASKS
 
  • Be highly visible and have frequent/ongoing contact with residents assigned to RAs specific area, and demonstrate leadership skills in dealing with both crisis and non-crisis situations.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with the Supervisor of Student Housing regarding all community development activities, facilities concerns, and well as resident behavior issues.
  • Serve as a representative of the College when interacting with student parents, relatives, and visitors.
 
ADVISING RESPONSIBILITIES
 
  • Will advise students living in the KCKCC Student Housing Complex on academic as well as interpersonal issues/concerns.
  • Will assist with the Resident Hall Government system at KCKCC to explore and initiate social, educational, political, and recreational programs on campus and to influence Housing policies.
 
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
 
  • Must be a full-time KCKCC student with enrollment in no more than 15 undergraduate hours.
  • Must maintain a minimum 2.5 KCKCC cumulative GPA and be in good standing with the College and Student Housing for the duration of their employment.
  • Must share on-duty schedule in the student-housing complex on weekdays and rotating weekends and must be willing to be flexible and adapt to changing work hours as designated by the Student Housing Supervisor.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
 
  • High School Diploma or GED required, 12 hours of College Credit Preferred.
  • One year work experience working with students, customer service, or leadership, ability to coordinate administrative and support functions, previous community living experience.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit. Occasionally the employee will bend or twist at the neck more than the average person. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift items. The employee is directly responsible for safety, wellbeing, and work output.
 
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as the ability to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
 
  • Must be able to walk stairs to access student living quarters
  • Must be able to communicate with students verbally, in written and electronic form
  • Ability to hear to communicate with students.
 
SALARY/ RENUMERATION:  Housing accommodation in the Student Housing Complex, including all utilities, cable T.V., parking at no cost. RAs receive a stipend of $200 paid during every pay period, totaling $400 a month. In addition, RAs receive the regular tuition discount benefit given to part-time employees.
  
 
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT
 
 
This is a 12-month position. Employment contract begins August 1, 2016. RAs are required to attend staff development and training from August 3 – 12, 2016. Staff Development and training is an intensive experience. Additional commitments are not possible during training/opening. Vacation and duty schedules are assigned by the Supervisor of Student Housing, in cooperation with all staff according to the needs of the facility.
