PT ADULT EDUCATION – (ESL) ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

The ESL Instructor shall be responsible to the Enrollment Manager. The instructor will teach/tutor all aspects of the ESL program, including all levels, pre-beginning, beginning, intermediate, and advanced. The instruction will include students at all levels and will include speaking, listening, reading and writing. Along with teaching basic education, there will also be strong focus on workplace essentials, technology and civics and citizenship skills. This job is located at 7535 State Avenue.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Tutor/Teach all aspects of ESL including writing, math, reading, listening, speaking, employment skills, technology skills, and civics.
  2. Prepare lesson plans for all classes and/or a direct self-study program for individual students based on the College and Career Ready standards (CCRS), TABE competencies, and GED 2014.
  3. Learn and implement the TABE Assessment System
  4. Learn and use the PABLO Data system
  5. Evaluate and monitor all students’ progress
  6. Keep all necessary records to report attendance to the Enrollment Manager
  7. Keep all necessary records for state reporting.
  8. Administer assessments to students, as necessary
  9. Supervise any volunteer tutors and help make appropriate assignments for tutors to work with students.
  10. Attend staff development activities with other ESL staff during the year to enhance quality of instruction. 
  11. Perform other duties, as assigned, by the Enrollment Manager
  12. Attend all team meetings
  13. Attend all staff meetings
 
 
CONSULTING TASKS
  1. Consult with other instructors and the Enrollment Manager about student progress.
  2. Consult with Enrollment Manager concerning the purchase of books/materials and other items to enhance the program.
     
    SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervises any volunteer tutors concerning instructional techniques and course content information.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  1. Must have an appreciation for the intent of the Adult Education program relative to assisting individuals in the learning process.
  2. Must understand the urban community college philosophy of the open-door concept.
  3. Must be patient, flexible, and able to work with individuals with various backgrounds and abilities.
     

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • At least 1-2 years of experience working with Adult education/Adult Learners preferred.
  • Knowledge and/or experience of working with an ESL population.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Adult Education or a related field.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as the ability to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
 
HOURS:         Instructional Hours: 5:30 pm-8:30 pm, Monday – Wednesday
 
                        Site Hours: 5:00 – 5:30 pm and 8:30 – 9:00 pm, Monday –Wednesday
 
                        Planning Hours:  The position includes two additional planning hours per week. 
                        Total Hours: 14 hours per week for 45 weeks
 
SALARY:       $12,600.00 (This position is grant funded. When the grant ends the position ends.)
